Short answer The official HSK 3.0 textbooks plan about 30–36 class hours for level 1. Learners start the level 3 book after about 60–80 hours in total and the level 4 book after about 114–152 hours. For the vocabulary alone, the arithmetic is simple: at 10 new words a day, you meet every word up to level 3 in 100 days, up to level 4 in 200 days and up to level 6 in 540 days. How long it takes you depends mostly on your weekly hours and how much you review.
What the official textbooks plan
The textbook series 新HSK教程 (New HSK Course) follows the new syllabus and is published by the Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. Each book says how many class hours a learner should already have:
| Level | Words in total | Class hours (textbooks) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 300 | 30–36 for book 1 |
| 2 | 500 | book 2 after 30–36 |
| 3 | 1,000 | book 3 after 60–80 |
| 4 | 2,000 | book 4 after 114–152 |
| 5 | 3,600 | not yet published |
| 6 | 5,400 | not yet published |
Class hours are lessons with a teacher. Homework, review and listening practice come on top. For comparison, the earlier HSK Standard Course (for HSK 2.0) planned its level 5 book for learners with more than 200 class hours.
The vocabulary arithmetic
The new HSK lists a fixed number of words per level. If you introduce a fixed number of new words every day, you know exactly when you have met all of them:
| Up to level | Words | 5 new a day | 10 new a day | 20 new a day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 300 | 60 days | 30 days | 15 days |
| 2 | 500 | 100 days | 50 days | 25 days |
| 3 | 1,000 | 200 days | 100 days | 50 days |
| 4 | 2,000 | 400 days | 200 days | 100 days |
| 5 | 3,600 | 720 days | 360 days | 180 days |
| 6 | 5,400 | 1,080 days | 540 days | 270 days |
Meeting a word once is not knowing it. Every new word comes back for reviews, so the daily time grows with the number of words you have learned. With spaced repetition the reviews stay manageable, because a word you know well comes back less and less often.
Why the answer differs from person to person
- Hours per week. 100 hours take 10 weeks at 10 hours a week, and a year at 2 hours a week.
- The level steps grow. Level 4 adds 1,000 words, level 5 adds 1,600 and level 6 adds 1,800. Levels 5 and 6 take much longer than levels 1 to 3.
- Each skill takes its own time. Recognising a word when you read it comes first. Understanding it when you hear it and writing it from memory take extra practice, and the exam tests all three from level 3 on.
- What you already know. If you read Japanese kanji, reading goes faster. Tones, listening and simplified characters still take time.
For comparison: the FSI estimate
The Foreign Service Institute of the US State Department puts Mandarin in its hardest category for English speakers: about 88 weeks or 2,200 class hours of full-time training to reach professional working proficiency. That goal is higher than any single HSK level, but it shows the scale: Chinese takes years, and steady daily work beats short bursts.
Plan backwards from your exam date
Count the words between your current level and your target, then divide by the days until your exam. Leave the last weeks for reviews and mock exams.
- Example: You know the 500 words of level 2 and want to take level 4 in 9 months. That is 1,500 new words. If you introduce them in the first 7 months (about 210 days), you need about 7 new words a day, and you keep 2 months for reviews and mock exams.
- Check every month. If you fall behind, add a few words a day early instead of many at the end.
How Hanzi By Heart helps
Hanzi By Heart has all 5,400 words of HSK 3.0 levels 1–6. Choose your levels and your daily pace, or enter your exam date. The statistics then show when every selected word will have been introduced and whether that fits your exam plan. You learn every word three ways, reading, listening and writing, and each skill has its own review schedule.
Questions and answers
How long does HSK 1 take? The official course plans about 30–36 class hours. The 300 words take a month at 10 new words a day.
Can I reach HSK 4 in a year? The vocabulary works out: 2,000 words in 365 days are about 6 new words a day. Grammar, listening and writing need time too, so a year needs steady daily study.
How long does HSK 6 take? For the 5,400 words alone, 540 days at 10 new words a day. Most learners need several years for the whole level, including listening, reading speed and essays.
